Choosing Your RV: Class A vs. Class C Motorhomes

For those new to the RV game, or those just looking for a change of pace, it can be hard to decide what type of motorhome is best for you. First off, what even is a motorhome? In simple terms, a motorhome is a self-propelled RV. It’s sort of like a portable apartment or small home. Most of them have amenities like kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms. They are great for long vacations or for those with an adventurous but alternative lifestyle.

When choosing what kind of motorhome you want, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with Class A, B, and C motorhomes. Although it is best to get an overview of all three, it is recommended you just compare Class A and Class C motorhomes, because Class B is in between of both of them.

So let’s take a look.

Class A vs. Class C Motorhomes

Class A Motorhomes

Class A motorhomes are the biggest, most luxurious motorhomes you can find. They are for people who plan on spending a lot of time in their RV. They are for those who think of air conditioning, master bedroom, showers, kitchens, awnings, extra storage, and television as necessities. As you can imagine, it’s pretty big. It has to, to accommodate all that fanciness. Class A motorhomes range from 21 to 45 feet in length and some can fit up to ten people.

There are a few downsides to having an RV this big. For starters, the fuel economy is pretty bad, at 8 to 10 miles a gallon. Also, not just anyone can handle driving a massive motorhome all over. It’s like driving a semi. It requires a lot of skills, training, and there is no room for mistakes.

It also has to be said that, especially for people who like to set up camp in RV parks and campgrounds, it’s not entirely common to find spots that will fit RVs this big. That’s something you’ll have to plan ahead for. At the end of the day, if you are willing to spend more money and effort on a luxurious motorhome, as well as the maintenance and operation costs, then Class A is your best bet.

Class C Motorhomes

Forget Class B. The real game is Class A vs. Class C. Both are motorized, both are fairly big, and both have amenities.

For those who will want to set up camp and then take off for an adventure, a Class C motorhome would be perfect. It has a cabin chassis, meaning the actual motorhome is being pulled by a car. The benefit of this is that, after parking at a campsite or your end destination, you can leave the motorhome parked while you go out to explore the city or the great outdoors. Even better, you will still have access to a bathroom, comfy bed, and a cold lemonade from the built-in fridge. Despite the decrease in size, you’re not sacrificing your comfort.

In the game of Class A vs. Class C RVs, Class Cs are the more convenient counterpart to their luxurious big brother. They range from 20 to 33 feet in length, so they are much easier to drive, get better gas mileage, and have more options for parking spots in campgrounds and trailer parks. They usually accommodate 4 to 8 people, so this is a great alternative for small families or a group of friends looking for the road trip of a lifetime.

Class C motorhomes are very similar to Class A, but being smaller and having a cabin chassis, they’re more affordable and convenient. There is limited space in a Class C, so, unlike the massive and accommodating Class A, these are better for vacations than long-term living.

There’s a lot to take into consideration when making this decision. How many people are you planning on traveling with? What size motorhome do you want? Is luxury important to you? Are you wanting one with a cab that you can detach? You have to take in a lot of factors that will play a big part in the financial commitment. Both have pros and cons but, in the end, it’s not so difficult to decide between a Class A or Class C motorhome. It’s simply about finding what suits your needs.
